Pen ink, permanent markers, nail polish, wax crayons, shoe polish, and, of course, hundreds of different colours and types of spray paint are used to make graffiti. All of these items have various chemical compositions and hues, and each of them poses a hurdle that some contractors who are just starting to offer graffiti removal services may find tough to overcome. Teenagers and gang members in the neighbourhood have devised a variety of novel chemicals with which to leave tags and drawings. Graffiti removal can be difficult because the methods are continuously changing, from permanent markers designed to write on stainless steel to blended formulations of spray paint that are applied and subsequently “burned” into the surface. In certain circumstances, the tags can be readily painted over, although this depends on the type of tag that was used. Because the tags will usually bleed through numerous layers of paint, the only method to remedy the problem is to remove them. The types of surfaces from which we remove graffiti vary as well, ranging from brick, block, and other hard porous surfaces such as stone, to painted surfaces such as aluminium siding, garage doors, vehicles, and playground equipment, increasing to the job’s complexity. Graffiti should be removed fast, regardless of how it was applied or what surface it was removed from, so that it is easier to remove and vandals are discouraged from further devastation.
